What You'll Learn on NZRC CORE Advanced Course
NZRC CORE Advanced develops the practical skills, knowledge and teamwork required to manage and supervise resuscitation events. Face-to-face training combines practical skill stations with realistic scenarios involving collapse, medical emergencies and trauma.
- Adult collapse management and high-quality CPR
- Child and infant collapse management
- Safe use of an AED
- Manual defibrillation and recognition of common cardiac rhythms
- Airway management, oxygen and ventilation techniques
- Use of airway adjuncts, including supraglottic airways
- Recognition and management of the deteriorating patient
- Initial assessment and management of serious trauma
- Management of common medical emergencies, including anaphylaxis

Assessment and Pre-Course Requirements
Before the course
CORE Advanced requires a minimum of three weeks of self-directed learning and pre-course preparation before attending the face-to-face training. Participants should have access to the required NZRC CORE Advanced pre-reading materials at least three weeks before their course and are expected to familiarise themselves with the theory and knowledge before attending.
The face-to-face course can then focus on practical resuscitation skills, clinical decision-making, teamwork and realistic scenarios.
Assessment
To gain NZRC CORE Advanced certification, participants must successfully complete formal assessments of their resuscitation skills, theoretical knowledge and cardiac rhythm recognition.
Practical skill assessments include management of adult collapse, management of child or infant collapse, AED use, manual defibrillation and management of airway obstruction and breathing. Participants also complete a multiple-choice assessment of their theoretical knowledge.
Clinical scenarios are an important part of the face-to-face training but are not formally assessed.
Successful completion of the required pre-course work and face-to-face assessments enables participants to be awarded NZRC CORE Advanced certification.

Who is NZRC CORE Advanced for?
NZRC CORE Advanced is designed for healthcare professionals who may be expected to manage or supervise resuscitation events. This can include doctors, nurses, paramedics, dentists and other eligible healthcare professionals who require advanced resuscitation training for their clinical role.
How long is the CORE Advanced course?
The face-to-face CORE Advanced course is a full-day programme. Participants must also complete the required self-directed learning and pre-course preparation before attending.
How much pre-course preparation is required?
Participants should allow a minimum of three weeks for self-directed learning and preparation before the face-to-face course. Access to the required NZRC CORE Advanced learning materials should therefore be arranged well in advance of the course date.
How am I assessed?
CORE Advanced includes formal assessment of practical resuscitation skills, theoretical knowledge and cardiac rhythm recognition. Practical assessments include adult and child/infant collapse management, AED and manual defibrillation, and airway and breathing management. Clinical scenarios are used extensively during training but are not formally assessed.
NZRC allows up to six weeks after the face-to-face training to pass all assessments if someone doesn’t complete everything successfully on the day.

Our Wellington-region CORE Advanced courses are currently held in the Paramedic Simulation Suite at Whitireia in Porirua. First Aid Collective plans to offer CORE training in additional locations around New Zealand as our programme expands.
How long is NZRC CORE Advanced certification valid for?
New Zealand Resuscitation Council CORE certificates have a recommended validation period of one year from successful completion of the assessment. However, individual employers, professional bodies and accreditation organisations may have different recertification requirements and may recognise certification for longer. NZRC does not recommend recognition of CORE certification for longer than three years.
