NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child combines practical resuscitation skills with realistic scenarios involving adult and child collapse and medical emergencies. Training focuses on developing the skills and teamwork required to manage the early stages of cardiac arrest and other life-threatening emergencies.
- Adult collapse management and high-quality CPR
- Child and infant collapse management and CPR
- Safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Airway assessment and management
- Bag-mask ventilation and oxygen delivery
- Use of airway adjuncts, including oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways

Assessment and Pre-Course Requirements
Before the course
CORE Immediate Adult and Child includes self-directed pre-course learning that participants are expected to complete before attending the face-to-face course. This preparation helps ensure that course time can focus on practical resuscitation skills, teamwork and realistic scenarios.
Participants should allow sufficient time to complete the required pre-course learning before their course date.
Assessment
To gain NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child certification, participants are required to successfully complete the course assessments.
Practical assessments cover the key resuscitation skills taught during the course, including management of adult, child and infant collapse, CPR, AED use and airway management.
Participants are also required to demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond effectively to resuscitation emergencies.
Clinical scenarios are an important part of the face-to-face training and provide an opportunity to bring these skills together in a realistic clinical setting.
Successful completion of the required pre-course learning and face-to-face course requirements enables participants to be awarded NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child certification.

Who is NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child for?
NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child is designed for healthcare professionals who need the skills to recognise and respond to a deteriorating or collapsed adult, child or infant and provide immediate resuscitation.
How long is the CORE Immediate Adult and Child course?
The course includes self-directed pre-course learning followed by approximately six hours of face-to-face practical training.
Is there pre-course learning?
Yes. Participants complete self-directed learning before attending the face-to-face course. This allows more of the course day to be devoted to practical resuscitation skills and scenarios.
How am I assessed?
Participants are assessed on the knowledge and practical resuscitation skills required for NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child certification. Assessment takes place as part of the course.
NZRC allows up to six weeks after the face-to-face training to pass all assessments if someone doesn’t complete everything successfully on the day.
Where are your CORE Immediate Adult and Child courses held?
Our Wellington-region CORE Immediate courses are currently held in the Paramedic Simulation Suite at Whitireia in Porirua. First Aid Collective plans to offer CORE training in additional locations around New Zealand as our programme expands.
How long is NZRC CORE Immediate Adult and Child certification valid for?
New Zealand Resuscitation Council CORE certificates have a recommended validation period of one year from successful completion of the assessment. However, individual employers, professional bodies and accreditation organisations may have different recertification requirements and may recognise certification for longer. NZRC does not recommend recognition of CORE certification for longer than three years.
